help me, i have a disease. i can’t stop buying vintage dresses!!!! i really can’t. i see one i like and i HAVE to have it. i don’t even wear them, because i work in an environment where dressing up is frowned upon… so i just have a big bag full of the vintage dresses that i have to have but never wear!!

for example, just 5 minutes ago, i bought two lovely dresses from the extremely awesome salvagelife:

Wow, I totally cleaned up my workspace yesterday, and sorted out tons of destash supplies!! About 50 lots in all. I am so proud because for a long time, my workspace was a festering mess, with piles upon new piles of newest supplies burying newer supplies burying new supplies, so I quickly forgot what I actually had and the huge mess made me not want to sort through it all, leading to me buying more new supplies…. Etc etc. Ridiculous! I rediscovered charms and chains I forgot I had, vintage pins, plus I just felt better not looking at piles of plastic as I worked. =) There are lots of fun lots to be listed soon in my destash shop, so check back often if you’re looking for something to create with!

Also, I made some new designs with my newly acquired gemstones. All paired with vintage something or other, I kept this first part of the collection simple, just to get a feel for the clarity and sparkle of these beautiful stones, and also because I think summer is a nice time to keep things simple!

I really have waaaaay too many beads at this point. I don’t even know what I have anymore. I have started sorting them out, and decided to set up a separate etsy shop for my destash supplies and maybe some vintage items I have been hoarding (compact, ornate mirrors, jewelry cases etc). Here are some items that I added to begin with!! Hopefully someone will find a good use for them because at this point I’m practically swimming in beads.

When I started pequitobun, I was really inspired to create jewelry wholly from vintage components. This was mainly because I absolutely love all things vintage, for their history and style (yes, my closet is FULL of vintage dresses and bags), but also because repurposing and recycling is an environmentally sound way of pursuing my love of design and fashion. That was the real driving force behind my choice of creating reinvented vintage jewelry.

At first, I started with EVERYTHING vintage, from clasps, hooks and beads down to headpins and jumprings (except earwires of course, for hygiene reasons!). Then, as I started to create more elaborate designs, I decided that to create heirloom quality designs, I needed to use higher quality findings and wire, namely, quality gold findings. I thought about it for a long time as I understand that the gold I would use would be mined from somewhere, and mining is just not as environmentally sound as not mining. In the end, I caved to my love of quality design, and settled on gold-filled as a nice compromise between crappy gold-plated and decadent pure gold. I still use mainly vintage pins, earrings, beads, charms and bits and pieces—keys, buttons, etc., and my designs are, of course handmade in sustainable small quantities, but my initial purpose had definitely been shifted slightly.

I told myself I wouldn’t use gemstones for the same reason.

That was before I came upon Linda Trent’s (self and most appropriately described) extraordinary gemstones. Lin, of course, is a well- known independent jewelry designer with serious stripes, and she has been generous enough to offer the overstock of her amazing beads at great prices to the Etsy community. She has a fantastic eye for unique shapes, colours and cuts, and I just melted when I saw her beads. I had not bought a SINGLE gemstone before I came upon her shop. I think I took a vow of sorts to buy the most minimal amount of new (non-vintage) supplies, and I moved her beads in and out of my cart for a while, deliberating. I don’t know why I make a big drama out of buying beads, but it was kind of a big decision for me—plunging into the world of gemstone beads. I knew it was a big, big murky world, full of cheap imports mined in environmentally unsound ways, glass passed off as gemstones, and, most of all, I knew I wouldn’t stop at one gorgeous olive jade pendant, I would need. MORE.

So I did. I bought her beads. They rock big time and now I mix in semi-precious stones with my gold-filled findings and my lovely vintage bits: (see aforementioned lovely olive jade pendant, yes, that single pendant is what I am making a big deal of)

I still do try to use mostly vintage beads, and I have a ton more vintage beads and charms than anything new or vaguely new. But my need to create ever more complicated designs with more texture and colours left me *dramatic music on* no choice!!!! *dramatic music off*. I hope that doesn’t make me too much of a weak person. =(

I just had to get that flip-flopper guilt off my chest, though I know no one cares. Boy am I overly dramatic huh??

p.s. I know haven’t been updating the shop recently! I have been filling some retail orders for my very very lovely retailers. When that is done, I will be back with more and new! =)
