we’re finally all set up in our new place! i spent some time worrying about how my new workspace is going to look… in our old place, my supplies took over the entire living room, so much so that we could never have guests over. =( Anyways, now the only part of my apartment that will be messy is the caged- in section of our bedroom with my nice antique mahogany desk workspace! Why is it caged? We figured that it’ll maximise my time with pequito to have his home around my workspace! Sometimes I’m making stuff, and he’s licking my feet with bunny kisses asking for attention. He’s such a cutie!!

Anyways, lots of updates in my Etsy shop, so take a look! it takes more time than I currently have to add entries to my website, so I’ll be adding new stuff mainly to the Etsy shop for now. Some favourites:

Also, time is quite overdue to pick the recipient of a free pair of my high-powered fashionista earrings, the free gift for August! For those who are not subscribed, I offer a free piece of jewelry to one person on my mailing list each month, so email me at pequitobun@gmail.com to join the list if you would like to find out about sales, updates etc, as well as have a chance to win free pequitobun jewelry. =) The item for that month is usually posted on the front page of my website.

This month, the winner is unbreak******@hotmail.com. I had my boyfriend say a number and that corresponded to the above email address when sorted alphabetically. (poor boy, he’s building me an IKEA stepstool and they mislabelled the screws, so he had to start all over!!!). Please contact me to arrange for shipping! Thank you for reading, guys! Have a great weekend! I’ll figure out soon which the free gift for September will be!

I’ve been working with a variety of gemstones for a while now, and I have definitely discovered that I seem to prefer some stones over others, to the extent that it makes me wonder if this connection is somehow innate. For example, even though many people love lemon quartz and citrine, their colours and “feel” just don’t appeal to me all that much. This is despite the fact that those two are both stones that often come in large sizes with few inclusions (and are hence cheaper to obtain gem quality stones of; for example, to find a clear emerald or even tourmaline is much much more difficult than to find a clear citrine, hence, emeralds and tourmaline are much more expensive).

In contrast, I absolutely love aquamarine (make that the whole beryl family, which includes emeralds) and rubies (actually a red sapphire). Maybe it’s the inner snob in me, afterall, those emeralds and rubies are considered precious stones. Aquamarine is just such a pleasing stone, I get very happy and peaceful just from looking and holding one (or a strand). I still think that those “gem traits” descriptions of various stones are pretty shammy (i.e. different stones are said to promote different feelings of harmony, peace or happiness blah blah), but perhaps there really is a grain of truth to them!

In any case, I’ve been buying lots of aquamarines and rubies and making stuff with them.

Wow, I totally cleaned up my workspace yesterday, and sorted out tons of destash supplies!! About 50 lots in all. I am so proud because for a long time, my workspace was a festering mess, with piles upon new piles of newest supplies burying newer supplies burying new supplies, so I quickly forgot what I actually had and the huge mess made me not want to sort through it all, leading to me buying more new supplies…. Etc etc. Ridiculous! I rediscovered charms and chains I forgot I had, vintage pins, plus I just felt better not looking at piles of plastic as I worked. =) There are lots of fun lots to be listed soon in my destash shop, so check back often if you’re looking for something to create with!

Also, I made some new designs with my newly acquired gemstones. All paired with vintage something or other, I kept this first part of the collection simple, just to get a feel for the clarity and sparkle of these beautiful stones, and also because I think summer is a nice time to keep things simple!

When I started pequitobun, I was really inspired to create jewelry wholly from vintage components. This was mainly because I absolutely love all things vintage, for their history and style (yes, my closet is FULL of vintage dresses and bags), but also because repurposing and recycling is an environmentally sound way of pursuing my love of design and fashion. That was the real driving force behind my choice of creating reinvented vintage jewelry.

At first, I started with EVERYTHING vintage, from clasps, hooks and beads down to headpins and jumprings (except earwires of course, for hygiene reasons!). Then, as I started to create more elaborate designs, I decided that to create heirloom quality designs, I needed to use higher quality findings and wire, namely, quality gold findings. I thought about it for a long time as I understand that the gold I would use would be mined from somewhere, and mining is just not as environmentally sound as not mining. In the end, I caved to my love of quality design, and settled on gold-filled as a nice compromise between crappy gold-plated and decadent pure gold. I still use mainly vintage pins, earrings, beads, charms and bits and pieces—keys, buttons, etc., and my designs are, of course handmade in sustainable small quantities, but my initial purpose had definitely been shifted slightly.

I told myself I wouldn’t use gemstones for the same reason.

That was before I came upon Linda Trent’s (self and most appropriately described) extraordinary gemstones. Lin, of course, is a well- known independent jewelry designer with serious stripes, and she has been generous enough to offer the overstock of her amazing beads at great prices to the Etsy community. She has a fantastic eye for unique shapes, colours and cuts, and I just melted when I saw her beads. I had not bought a SINGLE gemstone before I came upon her shop. I think I took a vow of sorts to buy the most minimal amount of new (non-vintage) supplies, and I moved her beads in and out of my cart for a while, deliberating. I don’t know why I make a big drama out of buying beads, but it was kind of a big decision for me—plunging into the world of gemstone beads. I knew it was a big, big murky world, full of cheap imports mined in environmentally unsound ways, glass passed off as gemstones, and, most of all, I knew I wouldn’t stop at one gorgeous olive jade pendant, I would need. MORE.

So I did. I bought her beads. They rock big time and now I mix in semi-precious stones with my gold-filled findings and my lovely vintage bits: (see aforementioned lovely olive jade pendant, yes, that single pendant is what I am making a big deal of)

I still do try to use mostly vintage beads, and I have a ton more vintage beads and charms than anything new or vaguely new. But my need to create ever more complicated designs with more texture and colours left me *dramatic music on* no choice!!!! *dramatic music off*. I hope that doesn’t make me too much of a weak person. =(

I just had to get that flip-flopper guilt off my chest, though I know no one cares. Boy am I overly dramatic huh??

p.s. I know haven’t been updating the shop recently! I have been filling some retail orders for my very very lovely retailers. When that is done, I will be back with more and new! =)

I set up a website when I opened my etsy shop almost a year ago. I was planning to develop both simultaneously, but my Etsy shop quickly overwhelmed me, and the website fell by the wayside…

Recently, I revisited my website and did a small revamping, just to update some links, and generally try to decrease its shoddiness. In the process, I discovered that it was actually not too difficult to set up a cart and make the site eCommerce ready. Besides the obvious advantages of having a website- it looks more professional, I can add links, a portfolio and as many items as I wish organized in an easy-to-navigate way, I thought it would be kind of fun to design a site for pequitobun with its own look and feel…a little home on the web if you will!

Long story short, I took the plunge of designing a website! Voila! You can now shop pequitobun at pequitobun.moonfruit.com. I kept the domain name “.moonfruit.com”, because I think that it sounds much, much more “pequitobun-like” than “pequitobun.com”! http://www.pequitobun.com sounds so…commercial?

What will you find at pequitobun? I think that for now, it will only host pequito haute, the couture line at pequitobun, and occasional special collections, a couple of which I have been planning for some time and have not yet had the time to execute (rest assured that the supplies for these ideas have been steadily piling up on my worktable).

To begin with, there are tons of new designs in my summer pequito haute collection, now available exclusively on the new site. Some of these include:

To celebrate this rather grand opening, I will be having a 3-day sale at my Etsy shop! The catch is, you have to visit my new website and find the coupon code on the main page. It will say 15% off storewide at pequitobun’s Etsy shop (code). Just enter the (code) in message to seller upon checkout, and wait for a revised invoice. If you have bought from pequitobun before, you are additionally entitled to free shipping during this period, as a thank you for being a repeat customer. Enter (code)+freeship.

Further, all purchases made on pequitobun’s NEW website will receive free shipping! Just purchase away, and wait for a shipping refund via Paypal.

The sale will last from Thursday night, midnight, to Monday morning, 3am.

Ooh, and from now on, I will be having a monthly drawing for a free jewelry item for mailing list subscribers. So, do, do join my mailing list to qualify! It’s really simple, and I promise your email will not be shared with anyone else. You can also unsubscribe at any time!

Last lastly, any comments on the site are really appreciated and welcome! I have never designed a website before and I tried my best to make it user-friendly and easy to navigate, but I don’t know if I achieved this.

Ciao! Thanks for staying till the end of this looooooong post! Have a wonderful weekend! It looks like it’ll be really pretty here in Boston! =)
